Sherlock holmes looking for your passionWhat are you passionate about?  I find this to be a very disarming question. Many times, when asked, the answer I get is long, drawn out and makes little to no sense. Answers like this lead me to the conclusion that what these peeps are really saying is “I don’t know…HELP!!!”

If this sounds like you, don’t worry about it. You are definitely not alone. They real question then becomes, “How in the *explicative* do I find out what I am passionate about?  Well guess what peeps? Ole Tony Tone just may have an answer for ya…(thank me later).

This method is by no means the ONLY way to find your passion. It can, however, help you get to that coveted “AHA!” moment. This will  serve to speed you gleefully along your path to fulfillment and satisfaction in both your life and career choices. (all this for FREE ninety-nine!).

Prerequisites:

You have to like to read. (If you don’t, why? Get over that nonsense TODAY. You’ll be happy you did.)

You have to have a Del.icio.us account. (if you don’t have one then you can sign up for one here) NOTE: You can also do this exercise using your own favorite social bookmarking site. (Posterous or Evernote can also be used to bookmark web pages) I suggest using Del.icio.us and will be referring to it specifically in this post.

Make sure to download the Del.icio.us bookmarklet so that you can easily save and tag web pages that you enjoy.

The Rundown:

Drumroll please! (thanks) Over the course of the next thirty days you will spend an hour a day reading. Tah-dah! The caveat, however, is that you will be tagging and bookmarking the articles/blog posts/videos that really move you over the next 30 days.

You don’t have to limit yourself as to what you actually read. It just has to be online. (no books allowed during the allotted time) If you can’t commit to a whole hour then just pick a set amount of time and STICK TO IT! (I can’t stress this enough)

Conclusion:

Over those thirty days you will start to notice a few things:

1) Most of what you read will fit into certain themes (marketing, finance, comedy, SEO, origami, gardening, etc)

2) You will start to ENJOY the pursuit of knowledge about the things you enjoy.

3) You will begin to be heck of a lot more knowlegable about the things that interest you.

On day 30, take a look at the section of your personal “del.icio.us bookmarks” page and look all the way on the right hand side. There you will see a list of your top 10 tags. This is where the pay dirt is located! You will end up with a list of tags that will tell you lots about your likes. Here’s what mine looks like:

Tony Idem's Top Ten Del.icio.us BookmarksSeems that I have a healthy interest in SEO, marketing, social media, and strategy. Who would’ve thunk it? See, up until that point I knew that I had a wide range of stuff I liked but after looking at my tag list I was able to drill down and see what was REALLY piquing my true interest. This blog is in large part a result of this exercise.

You will notice similar things about yourself as well. There may even be some things in there that you were not consciously aware of. At the very least you will learn more about your interests. Sometimes your passion will not be a specific thing per se. Oftentimes it will be a series of different things all fitting in some kind of theme. Whatever the case may be you will have a great place to start to continue exploring your interests.

Once again, this is not meant to be an end-all be way to finding your passion but merely another step in that direction. I am a firm believer in the daily practice of living a life of meaning. YOU are the one who makes the decision to live that type of life.

Take this exercise as one small key to help you find and move down that path. Truthfully, there is not ONE key, just many keys leading to your ONE truth. Whoa, sorry to get all philosophical on you but it beez like that sometimes…
